September 1st - Why has the web-site address changed?
Why has the web-site address changed?
For two reasons.
- The Geocities site was used as a starting point for the website, to see whether a parish website was viable at present. Geocities was chosen because it did not involve the parish in any expense and because it was easy to maintain. However the Geocities site had the disadvantage of very intrusive, and sometimes inappropriate, pop-up windows containing advertisements. Recently Geocities have withdrawn the facility for easy updating of the site, and any substantial updates are very labour intensive to load. I therefore looked at some of the other 'free' web-hosting sites and decided to try
. After moving a copy of the parish website to UKSERVE I was surprised and delighted to receive an e-mail from them offering to upgrade the site to their premium service, faster access with no advertising banners, at no charge. It is refreshing to find a company prepared to make such an offer, and I have no hesitation in recommending their services to anyone for personal or business use.
- Fr Pannell is also the parish priest for Stainforth. While Thorne / Moorends and Stainforth will retain their independence as distinct and different parishes then we do need to consider elements are common to both parishes, and, where possible save a lot of effort by doing things once instead of twice. One example is web sites. Thorne / Moorends currently has one, but Stainforth doesn't; however there is a possibility that Stainforth may want a presence on the web sooner rather than later. It therefore makes sense to have a common web site, with a main section applicable to both parishes, and separate sub-sections for each parish. It also makes sense to have a new name applicable to both. This was difficult, as StainforthThorneMoorends or StJosephOurLadyAssumption are cumbersome as web names, difficult to remember and type correctly. We have therefore compromised on a shorter and hopefully easy to remember name.
From Stainforth take the STA
From Thorne take the THO
From Moorends take ME
Put them together and you get STATHOME. I don't think there is a St Athome, but maybe you do have a St at home ?
So please make a note of www.stathome.co.uk.co - don't forget the extra 'co' at the end, I know it is unusual, but it is essential!!
