ANY MORE CHEESE GROMIT?

Glasses empty - eyes down

To the disappointment of many people Wallace & Gromit were unable to attend the recent Cheese and Wine party at the presbytery. However over forty people did attend the function and everyone agreed it was a great success.

The evening consisted of a good social get together intermingled with raffles, tombola and a quiz. A fantastic effort was put into the preparation of the evening, and as you can see, the buffet provided was excellent. There was more than enough for everyone. However so that the wine did not go to waste some of us had to work really hard to ensure that it was all consumed. What a spread!

Great prize - just what I wanted?

The quantity and variety of prizes ensured that most people walked away with at least one prize. However one person was unsure what he had won and would like anyone who recognises the item to let him know it’s use.

Several suggestions were made, none of which can be printed here.

COFFEE MORNING FOR JUSTICE

What has a coffee morning to do with justice, you might ask. The answer is “a lot”. Recently the Ladies of the Wednesday Meeting held a coffee morning in the presbytery for the benefit of Amnesty International. About thirty people came to the house to enjoy a morning of chatting to friends, playing bingo together, buying the home-made cakes and jam, and waiting to see which of the numerous raffle prizes they might have won. It was a very pleasant morning, splendidly organised and run by the ladies.

Amnesty International is an organisation founded forty years ago, in 1961, to uphold the human rights of all people. It campaigns for those who are forgotten – prisoners of conscience, held in prison but guilty of no crime; victims of torture; those unable to get a fair trial. We are fortunate in Britain not to suffer from such injustice and inhumanity but, sadly, for many people in many countries of the world these things are a fact of life, and in some cases, death. Our Bishop is a strong supporter of justice and peace and in each parish there are justice and peace groups, which try to extend the awareness of these crucial values. The coffee morning was our action for the cause of justice in the world and the amount raised is a tribute to the generosity of all who attended, donated prizes, bought tickets, and gave willingly of their time and expertise.

A total of £156 was raised and a cheque for this amount sent to Amnesty International. Along with “I just don’t believe it” Richard Wilson, aka Victor Meldrew, also a supporter of Amnesty, I would like to thank everyone for this generous contribution to fighting for justice to prevail. As the psalmist says: The Lord is just in all his ways, and holy in all his works. (Psalm 114)
