The aims of the socity are as follows To affirm, defend and promote the existence and value of human life from the moment of conception, and to defend and protect human life generally. To reassert the principle laid down in the United Nations 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child that the child "needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth." To defend, assist and promote the life and welfare of mothers during pregnancy and of their children from the time of conception up to, during and after birth. To examine existing or proposed laws, legislation or regulations relating to abortion and to support or oppose such as appropriate. SPUC represents a voice for the unborn. The society promotes awareness of the humanity of the unborn child to encourage more widespread recognition of the obligation to defend those with no means to defend themselves. SPUC's primary function is to campaign for changes in the law to protect unborn children, by initiating and generating public support for pro-life campaigns in Parliament. The society provides secretarial support to MPs presenting pro-life bills if they require it. SPUC maintains that all unborn children are entitled to the protection of the law. Nevertheless, the principal focus of the pro-life political campaign in Britain is to tighten the current law to stop the practice of abortion on demand—a realistic legislative objective which would save as many unborn lives as possible in as short a time as possible. Opportunities are also sought to introduce measures excluding abortion on grounds of the baby's race, sex or disability. Nicola Follows is a staunch supporter of SPUC, and we would urge anyone interested to talk to her to find out how best to help. The SPUC website contains details of News and campaigns (updated daily), the ethical issues concerned and of the organisation. |
